Coalition To Abolish ISA In Singapore

Singaporeans For Democracy (SFD) will be convening a first ever public consultation on 11 November 2011 to look into the feasibility of forming a coalition against the Internal Security Act (ISA) in Singapore.

Some 80 people from political parties, non-governmental organisations, ex-ISA detainees and ordinary Singaporeans have registered to attend this meeting.

To date, different organisations and individuals in Singapore have spoken out against the ISA and have organised various activities to highlight issues around the ISA. However no attempt has been made to establish a coalition against it in Singapore.

The idea to form a coalition for the abolishment of the ISA is not new.

The Abolish ISA Movement (AIM) better known in Malaysia as Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) is a coalition consisting of 83 organisations made up of non-governmental organisations, political parties, human right bodies, labour unions, women and student movement.

To some extent its presence and work on the ISA led the Malaysian government recently to announce that it was abolishing the ISA.

In Singapore, an alliance of like-minded individuals and organisations with the same motivation also stand to achieve a similar goal.

The media is invited to attend and report on the event. It will be held between 7-10pm, 11 November 2011 at Hotel Miramar, ORCHID Room, Level 2 East Wing. For directions and map to venue see this link.

Members of the public can attend the event by RSVPing via our Facebook event page.
